Stop the Desecration in Washington Square Park!
We call on Mayor Bloomberg and Park Commissioner Benepe to halt construction of this unpopular radical redesign plan and repair the park instead. Stop disturbing the dead. Stop the desecration. And stop trying to transform the spirit of Washington Square Park.
Open ’08, We Can’t Wait!
On Ash Wednesday, the 6th of February, 2008, nearly 200 people gathered at the historic Judson Memorial Church to tell Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Parks Department to stop the desecration of Washington Square Park. This enormously unpopular plan to radically redesign and transform the park has been opposed by New Yorkers for nearly three years. The shrinking of the park's wide walkways and the shrinking of its unique central gathering plaza, as well as the controversial moving of its fountain, has already led to the disruption of scores of bones buried beneath the park. The 180-year old park served as a burial ground from 1797 to 1825 for some of the city's African-Americans, Jews and indigent citizens.
